I can think of a few good reasons for owning one of these single-cup brewers:

* You are the only person in your house who likes coffee and you mostly only brew a cup at a time anyway

* You have a business and you want a convenient way for customers to be able to make coffee if they want some without just letting a carafe sit around all day

* You work in an office and would like a way to brew various types of coffee rather than the standard "1 flavor fits all" giant carafe that most offices do.

If any of those are what you had in mind, then this is a great idea. (If you really do brew giant carafes of coffee at a time then something like this wouldn't make much sense.)

So you buy some disks (sold separately) and put a disc in the machine and push a button and it will brew a cup of coffee for you. That's really all there is to it.

For more complicated drinks, like cappuccino, it's a two disc process: put in the steamed milk disc and let it do that, then put in the espresso disc and there's your cappuccino.

It can also do tea and hot chocolate. Shop around for the discs before you buy to see if you're okay with the prices and selection, and make sure you order some when you order this. It's a pretty wide selection, though, and the price is still less than I pay for a cup of coffee at a restaurant. (I did a Starbucks one first. It's Starbucks. If you don't like Starbucks, there's Maxwell House and other brands as well.)

The platform for the cup is adjustable so you can move it closer to the spout for small cups (espresso) or further from the spout to make room for a bigger cup. You can use a manual override to make a drink smaller+stronger or bigger+weaker.

Cleaning is easy. The spout and related bits pop out. (I had some trouble with this initially as the directions weren't real clear. Just push up on the spigot from below and it'll pop up, then you can unsnap it from the pokey bit.) Once you have the parts out, you can put them in the dishwasher or just rinse them off in the sink, then put them back in. Only takes about a minute. There's also a cleaning cycle you can run that just runs hot water/steam through the system (I'm not actually sure if this replaces the need to occasionally take it apart for a real cleaning...)

The splash guard backing and cup platform can be removed and replaced with another color, should you so desire. So the device itself is white but you can buy inserts to make the splash guard and platform red, blue, etc, in case white doesn't go well with your decor.

It's fast, too. No sitting around waiting for water to heat up as in my old coffee maker. You push the button and it starts flowing with hot water immediately. There is no apparent warm-up time required.

It could be argued that making coffee like this creates a lot of waste, but I dunno. That would be true if you were going to make 15 cups of coffee in a row from the same grinds, in which case you might as well just use a regular coffee maker. If you're just going to make 1 cup then it's probably close to the same amount of garbage generated. Rather than grinds + filter = 1 cup, it's 1 disc = 1 cup. Not that much difference.

The fact that this thing can do steamed milk for cappuccino is a nice bonus, too.

Anyway, it seems great so far. I think I'm going to get a lot of use out of it. I'm the only one in my house who likes coffee and it was just too much hassle to brew a cup at a time, so I think I'll enjoy using this.

(P.S.: Mocha Cappuccino: hot chocolate + cappuccino + big mug = yum)

(P.P.S.: 18/Dec/10 update - I've been using this almost every day since I got it. I do wish the default portions were bigger but apparently there are T-discs that have bigger sizes? I'll have to look harder next time I shop for them. Anyway, it's really great to be able to get a perfect cup of coffee every time rather than too weak, too strong, burnt or the various other mistakes I tend to make when doing my own. I can see that this coffee maker and I are going to be friends.)

Water

The Perfect Cup of Coffee

Element 1: Water

Coffee is 98% water. The quality of that water is as important as the quality of your coffee. If water doesn't taste good from the tap, it won't taste good in your coffee. Cuisinart includes a charcoal water filter to remove chlorine, bad tastes and odors, for the purest coffee flavor, every time you brew.

Element 2: Coffee

While coffee is 98% water, all of the flavor comes from the beans. To achieve the same great taste you enjoy at a coffee bar, you need to use the same quality of coffee. If you choose to grind your own beans, buy them fresh and whole. Buy only about a two-week supply at a time, because once the bean is broken, its flavor degrades quickly.

Element 3: Grind

The grind is critical for proper flavor extraction. If the grind is too fine, over-extraction and bitterness will result. Too fine a grind may also clog the filter. If grind is too coarse, the water will pass through too quickly and the maximum flavor will not be extracted. When grinding your own beans, we recommend a medium-fine grind.

Element 4: Proportion

Coffee that is too strong or too weak is always a disappointment. Follow the recommended portions of ground coffee in the instructions under Brewing Coffee, and later adjust the amount to suit your taste.

My last old Cuisinart bit the dust so I was in the market for a new one. I had also been in the market for a water kettle but really did not like the idea of having one more appliance on my counter top. When I checked out the Cuisinart web site to see what was new I was blown away by the idea of this coffee maker that also dispensed hot water!! I was so excited about it I had it sent overnight.

I have only had it for a day but oh what a wonderful cup of coffee I had this morning and right now I am loving the convenience of having hot water available for my tea drinking!

Pros: Everything!! In perfect working order and I was able to follow the manufacture's instructions on hot water without any problems at all! Best cup of coffee I have had even counting my old Cuisinart!

Cons: Only 1 negative so far. It is awkward pouring water into the coffee maker side and I guess I will need more practice at this to keep from splashing water all over everything.

So far extremely pleased with my purchase!!

I made my 1st pot of coffee with this today, and I can say that this pot made the best coffee I have ever made. I went with this Bunn model because it was affordable, had a clock/timer, and preheats the water to the correct temperature before the brewing begins. The unit was very attractive, easy to set up, and though the directions said the water had a 6 minute heat up time and then a 3 minute brew time, my coffee was ready much quicker. I add liquid creamer to my coffee, and even though it was chilled creamer, the coffee was still piping hot. The coffee was smooth, with no bitter notes at all. I used Dunkin' Donuts freshly ground arabica beans, and it tasted better than any coffee I ever got at their donut shop! Bunn has made a believer out of me, the water temp. really makes a huge difference.

This product does not plug into an outlet, has no buttons and doesn't beep when ready. If you're not willing to pour hot water over coffee grounds, this probably isn't the system for you. But if you're willing to put in a little extra effort for a lot of extra flavor, read on.

I had a traditional coffee maker, one that allows the grinds to sit in a cupcake filter inside a plastic container while near boiling water filters through. Hot water --> plastic --> consumption is probably not good. That coffee maker now resides in the break room of an office building.

I also have a french press, which makes pretty decent non-plastic coffee, but I don't like the grittiness of my frequent "cowboy" cups. So I reserved the french press for my tea, and started looking at other coffee brewing systems. The Aerobie Aeropress is hailed to make the perfect cup of coffee, but I ran into the heated plastic issue again. So that was out.

Chemex just makes sense. It's a simple design that comes in different sizes. You must use the Chemex filters, which are easy to fold into the required conical shape. Directions give a 5oz. water to 1 T. coffee ratio (I like my coffee a bit stronger, though). I have instant hot water (they recommend 200F), and find this temp works perfectly, so I don't have to heat my water in a kettle first. Chemex really highlights the blooming process in making coffee, and this is such an important step for flavor extraction.

It really makes a smooth, rich cup of coffee (granted, the quality of coffee depends on the quality of beans you use--and grind immediately before brewing!). I bought the glass lid, and please know that it DOES NOT FIT THIS SMALL MODEL. Cleanup is super easy--just rinse and invert to air dry.

After searching high and low for just the right water kettle, I found this little beauty. As a mother and a woman who goes through a lot of teas (loose and bagged), who uses this device everyday and has owned it for a year now, I enjoy using it as much as the first day I bought it. Here are my observations:

1. It's aesthetically pleasing. Being made mostly of glass, it's nice to be able to see what is going on inside while heating, how full the pot is, and if it needs cleaning. The water has the least contact with metal or plastic than any other non-stovetop, electric models I've seen and does not impart any type of strange flavor that I've read about in other kettles.

2. It attaches and detaches from its base as easy as picking it up and placing it down....very easy. Also, there is no specific placement required so it can swivel making it easier to place the base in any position or to even move it around if needed.

3. It's easy to handle, not too large/heavy nor are the handles too hot to handle and are very sturdy.

4. The unit heats up rather quickly and must have some kind of thermoregulation system as it roughly takes 5-7 minutes to heat up at the maximum fill line and about 2-3 minutes for the minimum line. Since I am often the only one drinking tea, it's nice to know that I can adjust accordingly.

5. The water stays warm for quite some time after turning off. However, you can always re-heat fairly quickly if needed.

6. It's convenient enough for my children #middle aged) to use on busy, cooler mornings. They can get their water going for hot cocoa and oatmeal all in one go.

7. One pot is enough to fill 7 porcelain smaller cups and just barely 5 regular mugs.

8. It's very easy to clean and the mesh filter mentioned in other comments is not a problem for my unit. I have not noticed any rusting at all. I may have a later model as it is not intended to be outright removed, I can see tabs whereby the filter could be removed if desired so this is a non-issue to me.

9. If I do utilize the included infuser, as another poster mentioned, I too typically add my `tea ball' after the water has completed boiling, especially when making green teas to avoid imparting unnecessary `bitter'. However, the infuser included is a nice size, squeezes open and shut, and attaches and detaches easily and securely. It closes tightly sealing the loose tea well and preventing particulate matter from escaping. Also, when I do use the infuser, I have not noticed any staining on the plastic, but then again, I don't I don't use this method often and that may be why.

10. It can be a bit noisy when the water starts to boil, but it is short lived and, actually, I like to use it as a method to listen from a distance and know when my water is ready as it does not have a sounding alarm.

I am not one to typically write a review, but this kettle has been such a nice help in my kitchen. I would recommend it to others.

This review is from: Aroma AWK-115S Hot H20 X-Press 1-1/2-Liter Cordless Water Kettle (Kitchen)

It's not often that one finds a product that's both visually attractive AND functionally satisfying. This kettle is one of those rare items: the shiny stainless steel body is beautiful to look at, and it boils water very very quickly! It features a nice big and sturdy handle which is very comfortable, and the spout is perfectly designed so that you'd have to be a real klutz to spill things. The cordless feature is wonderful, I tried a cheap ten dollar "Hot Pot" for a day or two and hated having to deal with the cord, plus that model doesn't have automatic shutoff despite what it says on the box---huge fire hazard! There is also a power-indicator light and water-level indicator gauge which are both handy, and I like that there is no exposed heating element inside which would be a pain to clean. Instead it's all smooth clean lines, inside and out!

Sure the outside of the kettle does get a little hot so you probably don't want to have this within reach of toddlers or anything, but if your toddlers can get up on your kitchen countertop then you have a LOT of other problems as well! I appreciated not having to deal with how plastic inevitably gets dirty-looking and sometimes leaves a funny taste in the water.

My only slight concern is that the lid needs a little bit of force to shut completely...probably some kind of insulating seal that shortens the time needed to bring water to a boil, but makes me wonder how durable that part of this kettle is going to be. Oh well, will find out in a few months or (hopefully) years, I suppose!
